DR Alfred Dawes, MBBS DM FACS, is one of the Caribbean’s leading general, laparoscopic and weight loss surgeons. Specialising in bariatrics and minimally invasive surgery, for the past ten years he has dedicated his life to delivering quality healthcare across the region, while advocating for a comprehensive, premier public health system in the country of his birth – Jamaica.
Dr Dawes graduated from the University of the West Indies, Mona in 2004 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). After training in the Bahamas at the Princess Margaret Hospital for four years, and one year at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona, he completed the Doctorate of Medicine for General Surgery in 2011.
Following his postgraduate studies, he honed his expertise in Bariatrics with a fellowship in Bariatrics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Santa Casa Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil. During his studies, he developed a strong passion for excellence in healthcare, which became a central part of his presidency of the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association from 2014-2015. He launched multiple campaigns to challenge the government to provide Jamaica with a top quality public healthcare system, having had firsthand experience of the challenges patients faced as a Senior Registrar in General Surgery at the Spanish Town Hospital from 2012-2015.
His zeal for excellence was dominant during his 2016-2019 tenure as the Senior Medical Officer of the Savanna La Mar Public General Hospital, as he worked tirelessly to bring the Type B facility up to standard.
Dr Dawes left public service in 2019 to focus on building his private medical practice, and today Windsor Wellness Centre, located in St Andrew and Westmoreland, is a pioneering leader in the field of health and wellness, offering a wide range of services for the entire family.
Dr Dawes is also co-founder of the Carivia General Hospital – a state-of-the-art, 20-bed, multifunctional private hospital that will offer cutting edge diagnostics, advanced surgical procedures and 24-hour A&E.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 2017, Dr Dawes continues on his mission to spread awareness on a number of health issues; share advice and his expertise; stress the importance of a balanced, healthy lifestyle; and advocate for a superior public healthcare system.
A believer in reaching his target audience wherever they are, Dr Dawes makes regular appearances in the media – print, radio and TV. He also uses various social media platforms to get his message across, as well as conducts wellness seminars for several companies – among them, JMMB, ARC Manufacturing, VMBS and the Office of Utilities Regulation.
